Is Homosexuality Really A Sin?

The churches of Christ Greet You (Romans 16:16)

Have you noticed in recent years the attempt in this world to label people with moral convictions as intolerant and loveless? Those who are engaged in the sin of homosexuality often employ this tactic. They have apparently convinced themselves and also seek to convince others that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. This, however, is not true. The Bible deals with homosexuality in a powerful and conclusive way. People who stand firmly where the Bible stands on this subject are far from loveless. In fact, it is love, which compels us to emphatically state that Homosexuality really is a sin! It is sound Bible study and respect for biblical authority, which allows us to prove the truth of this statement.

True love has never been permissive. Permissiveness comes from apathy, not from love. In First John 4:8 these simple words are recorded, “…God is love.” The truth of this statement is evident in that, “…God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). God’s love is absolute. He loves all of mankind. Because God is love, his desire is for humanity to “have everlasting life.” To receive everlasting life, however, there are conditions which must be met. Two of these conditions are belief in God and in Jesus Christ. The question, then, is what does it mean to believe?

Belief in God goes far beyond a simple acknowledgement of who He is. “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble” (James 2:19). Demons acknowledge that God exists, yet demons are not saved. Demons also knew Jesus was the Son of God: “And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of God!’ And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ” (Luke 4:41). Again, these demons acknowledged Jesus as the Christ, but they were not saved. Belief, which leads to everlasting life, must incorporate obedience to the will of God.

In First John 2:1-6, the New Testament clearly teaches that we know we are in Christ if we keep his commandments. This includes “do” commandments (Matt. 7:21, 24-27; Luke 6:46) and “don’t do” commandments (Matt. 5:33-37; 7:1).

The Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is a sin: “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due” (Romans 1:26-27).

Those who are in Christ do not practice homosexuality. One cannot live this lifestyle and force God to accept it. Some wish to ignore the above passage and others deny that it deals with homosexuality, but the truth cannot be changed.

The kingdom of God is not a democracy. It does not matter how much public opinion is swayed by gay rights groups, homosexuality will always be sinful. Denial and shouts of anger will not change the truth of God’s Word.

Friends, it is with sincere love that we tell you that homosexuality really is a sin. We do not apologize for standing with the Word of God. If apologies are forth coming, they should come from those who care so little for souls that they allow people who are living in sin to think that God will accept it.

If you die as a practicing homosexual, you will lose your soul. Like it or not, God’s Word is the authority by which men must live if they are to be saved (John 12:48; 2 Corinthians 6:9-11). It is impossible to change God’s Word to fit your lifestyle. You must conform your lifestyle to the Word of God (Romans 12:1-2).
