OUR FREEDOM IN CHRIST (John 8:31-32, 36)

The churches of Christ Greet You (Romans 16:16)

INTRO:
Let us always give heed to reading, exhortation, and doctrine (1 Tim. 4:13)!

“FREEDOM” is a wonderful word. Our great country came into being with the words
“Give me Liberty (Freedom), or give me Death.” A high price was paid for our freedom.
However, God paid a higher price for our freedom from sin (John 3:16; 10:10; Heb. 2:9;
2 Cor. 5:14; Acts 20:28).
All who want to be free must come to Jesus (John 14:6; Rev. 22:17)

I.    Jesus sets us Free from Ignorance
Ignorance is not bliss - it kills, but knowledge gives light and life (John 8:12; 2  Cor. 4:6).
People will err when they don’t know the Scriptures (Matt. 22:29; Acts 17:23, 30).
Only the knowledge of the truth can make us free (John 8:32; 17:17; 2 Pet. 1:3).
That’s why we must preach and teach the Gospel (Mark 16:15-16; Rom. 1:16).

II.    Jesus sets us Free from Religious Division
Jesus came into a divided world [Jews and Gentiles; Pharisees and Sadducees (Matt. 16:1);
Herodias (Matt. 22:16); the disciples and the multitudes (Matt. 23:1)].
Division is self-defeating and usually a work of the devil (Matt. 12:25).
Jesus came to unite all people (Eph. 2:16; John 17:20-21; 14:10; 1 Cor. 1:10, 13).

III.     Jesus sets us Free from the Guilt of Sin
Man’s greatest need is the forgiveness of sin (Rom. 3:23; 6:23; John 3:16).
Sin leads to separation from God or spiritual death (Isa. 59:1-2; Ez. 18:20).
But Jesus took our sins in His own body (Rom. 3:24; Isa. 53:6; 1 Pet. 2:24).
Therefore, only Jesus can save and set us free (Acts 4:12; John 8:24, 32, 36;
Matt. 28:18-20; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; Rom. 6:3-4, 17-18).

IV.    Jesus sets us Free from Condemnation
No man can obey perfectly, for we always fall short of God‘s righteousness (Rom. 3:10).
But in Christ we are forgiven as we walk in the light (1 Pet. 2:9; 1 John 1:5-7).
We walk in the light when we walk in the Spirit, and not after the flesh
(Rom. 8:1-4; 4:7-8; Mark 9:23; 1 John 5:13).
We must always trust the power in the blood of Jesus (Matt. 26:28),
and not our own goodness (2 Tim. 1:12).

V.    COMMITTMENT is the key
Jesus sets us free from sin and gives us peace when we have confidence in Him
and commit our life to Him (2 Cor. 5:17; Rom. 8:31-37; John 8:36; Phil. 4:7).
We were far off from God in sin, but in Christ we have been brought near (Eph. 2:13-15).
We now have the responsibility to live godly lives in joy (Rom. 6:22; 1 Pet. 1:18-19).
We must not allow ourselves to become entangled again in sin (Eph. 5:15-16; Gal. 5:1; Matt. 5:14-16).
We must walk as those who have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16; Phil. 2:5; Acts 20:19;
Rom. 8:6-8; Ps. 51:10; Eph. 4:22-24; Rom. 12:1-2).
