CLOTHED WITH HUMILITY

The churches of Christ Greet You (Romans 16:16)

Text: 1 Peter 5:5-7

If you are a child of God, you need to dress like a Christian!
How does one do that?
Maybe we are talking about modesty (1 Tim. 2:9-10).
We as Christians should surely dress in such a way that
the MAIN thing people notice about us in NOT our clothing, or LACK OF IT...
But modesty is not exactly the type of clothing we are taking about.
The clothing we are referring to must be a PERMANENT part of our life (1 Pet. 5:5-7).
Humility (lowliness of mind) must go toward one another under the mighty hand of God.

Some Characteristics of Humility
Humility is a characteristics of a true Child of God (Matt. 18:4; Matt. 23:12).
Abraham as an example (Gen. 18:27). John the Baptizer as an example (John 3:30).
Humility is not a natural quality with any of us.
But we must strive to acquire it (Matt. 5:3).
PRIDE is the opposite of humility (1 John 2:15-17; Prov. 6:17)
The Holy Spirit tells us that God will resist the proud (1 Peter 5:5-7).

The humble Christian will be less judgmental of others (Phil. 2:3).
The humble person can more easily change from the bad habits in his life.
This is true because humility prevents arrogance and pride (Prov. 16:18).
True love results in selflessness, therefore, humility is the root of true love.
The heart that loves (is humble) will empty itself (Phil. 2:7).

Some Things God Does for the Humble
God gives GRACE to the humble (1 Peter 5:5-7; Titus 2:11).
God will exalt the humble in due time, but He rejects or will resist the proud.
King Saul as an example (1 Sam. 15:23). King David as an example (2  Sam. 24:12ff).
A part of being humble is accepting God’s time table.

What is the Result of Humility?
Humility allows us to cast our cares on the Lord (1 Peter 5:7).
The proud person will not accept help from anyone, even God.
They go around feeling sorry for themselves, but that is not being clothed with humility.
Humility will let us realize that God cares for us,
and will take our burdens (Matt. 11:28-30).
We can depend on others to bear our burdens with us (Gal. 6:2)
and we can allow God to use us to bear the burdens of our brethren (Gal. 6:1).
